Newsletter Number 1                               Wednesday, 6th September 2006

Welcome to a new school year, the children look fantastic in their school uniform.  We have welcomed Emma, Elena, Joseph, Timothy, George, Elise, Hayley and Samantha to our school.  I hope that this year will be a successful and exciting one for everyone.  If you have concerns, however small they may seem please talk to me and we can resolve them.

Parent’s meetings:  Mrs Plummer and Mrs Bowkett will meet with the parents of Year 1 & 2 children next Monday, 11th September at 3.30 pm; Mrs Kelly will meet with parents of Year 3 & 4 children next Tuesday, 12th September at 3.30 pm.  These meetings will last for ½ hour and will give teachers the opportunity to set out the routines and topics for each class, it will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions. Mrs Bowkett will meet with the parents of Reception children on Monday 9th October. Creche facilities for all children will be provided until 4 pm.

Breakfast Club:  is up and running well, if you are interested in joining please contact Mrs Lorraine Williams.

School lunches:  Somerset Catering Services are offering us the possibility of providing school lunches.   These will be prepared at Weare First School at a cost of between £1.70 and £2. These meals would need to be collected from Weare and served, therefore, we would either require a volunteer to do this or the additional cost of employing someone would need to be added to the cost of the meal.  At this initial stage please complete the slip below if you would be interested in having school meals for your child, if there is enough interest to make it viable then we can proceed with the discussions with SCS.

After School Clubs:

Sports Club:  Miss Claridge will run an after school sports club on Mondays for Years 3 & 4 from 3.15 – 4.15 pm (if any Year 2 children are interested then please complete the slip below but numbers will be limited and older children will have priority).

Music Club:  Mrs Bowkett will be running a music singing club on Tuesdays from 3.15 – 4.15 pm - this is open to Years 1, 2, 3 and 4.

PE Club:  Our PE coach will run an after school PE club on Wednesdays from 3.15 – 4.15 pm, this is available for Years 1 and 2 (if there is not enough support from this age group Year 3 will be invited to join).  There is a charge for this club, (as we have to pay for her time in school) of £20 per term.

Thursday Club:  Miss Claridge will run an art and craft club on Thursdays from 3.15 – 4.15 pm, this is available for Year 3 and 4 children.

Please note that Miss Claridge is away on Thursday 28th September,  Monday 2nd October and Thursday 5th October so there will be no clubs on these days.

Tennis:  Burnham Tennis Club are again willing to run a tennis club in school, this is a 6 week course and starts on 14th September, please ask myself or Mrs Currie for a form for this.

Attendance:  If your child is not attending school please telephone the office 01278 760490 by 9.15 am. Please leave a message on the answer machine if the office is unattended.

Medicines:  If your child needs medicine during the school day, please give it to myself or a member of staff and you will need to sign the medicine record book.

PTA:  The annual general meeting of the PTA is on Thursday 14th September at 8 o’clock in school, please come and support this important meeting.

Swimming:  Years 3 & 4 will be attending swimming lessons at The Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre starting on the 20th September for 10 weeks.  This forms part of their PE curriculum.  To cover the cost of 3 swimming teachers and the coach to and from Cheddar we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £25.00. Your child will need to bring a swimming costume/trunks and a towel in a labelled waterproof bag.

Cycle Awareness:  I am having real difficulty in rescheduling these classes.  I have been advised that children less than 10 years of age do not have the maturity or the spatial awareness required to be riding a bicycle in a large group in a playground.  If you know of any organisation that could help please let me know.  Linked with our Travel Plan Mr Michael Dennis is willing to run one cycle awareness session for Year 4’s only on Monday 2nd October details to follow.

Please ensure that all uniform is labelled; we will try to find all lost items but it is much easier if it is labelled.

Newsletters are generally circulated on a Wednesday at fortnightly intervals, they are usually on brightly coloured paper and numbered and a copy is always placed on the Noticeboard outside the lower classroom.  If you do not receive a copy please ask at the office.  They will shortly be available on the school web site.  If you would like to add anything to the newsletter please let me know.

Head Lice:  We have already had one case of these on the 1st day. It would be very helpful if children with long hair could have it tied back to avoid contracting the lice.

Earrings:  For Health & Safety reasons only studs are to be worn in school.

Vouchers:  We are now saving Tesco sports vouchers, Box Tops & Persil stars – please ask all your friends and relatives to collect them for you.

Alice:  If anyone would still like a DVD of the summer production, please send £10 to the office.

Indemnity Form:  Please sign and return the enclosed indemnity form as soon as possible.
