Newsletter Number 18                                    Wednesday, 13th June 2007

Mrs Kelly is not well enough to return to school this term and has decided to resign from her teaching post here at East Brent.  She and her husband are moving to Devon.  She has worked very hard here over a number of years, if you would like to contribute towards a gift to mark her work here, please send it to the office.  We will be making a card with the children for her.  Ms Hare has happily agreed to continue to teach the Year 3/4 class until the end of December.  We will be making a permanent appointment during the autumn term to start in January.

Friendship Friday:  We raised £106 for Promise to Africa and had a very memorable day.

Web site:  Please look at the school web site to see photographs of the different activities that have taken place in school.  If you have any comments or suggestions about the web site or things you would like to see on it, please let me know.  www.eastbrentfirstschool.co.uk

Questionnaires:  Thank you for responding to the parent’s questionnaire. We had 33 returned, from those 406 had agreed or strongly agreed statements, there were 14 disagree or strongly disagreed statements and 8 don’t knows.  We will continue to work on the positive statements to ensure that your children are safe, well cared for and that learning is successful and enjoyable.

Some of the concerns referred to ‘homework’, some parents felt that school was expecting too much and some parents felt that there was not enough homework given.  We will continue to encourage children to ‘work at home’ on reading, spelling, tables and sentences.  We will also encourage researching for topics when appropriate.  If there are any problems at any time about homework then please talk to class teachers.

The other area of concern was ‘I am kept well informed’ – in terms of individual progress, there are 3 informal opportunities for you to see your children’s work and classrooms, there are two formal individual consultation opportunities for you to talk to class teachers about your child’s progress and there is 1formal written report in the summer term.  If you are worried about your child’s progress at any other time then please contact class teachers at the end of the school day and arrange a time to share your concerns.  ‘I am kept well informed’ in terms of school issues is mainly through the newsletter.  Newsletters are produced fortnightly, usually on a Wednesday, they are printed on brightly coloured paper and numbered so that you can track each issue.  A copy is on the school web site and also on the school noticeboard.  If you would like to receive a copy of the newsletter by e mail then please complete the reply slip at the end of this newsletter.  If you have any other suggestions regarding information then please let us know.

Children’s questionnaire:  The children have also completed a questionnaire and we have been talking to them  about their responses especially in terms of ‘homework’ and assemblies.

Awards:  It is widely felt among parents and teachers that it is no longer appropriate to single out individual children for cups at the end of year four.  With this in mind the PTA have agreed to fund a memento for each child which will be presented at the Leavers’ Service on 24th July.  If you have any suggestions or thoughts on this please let us know.

PTA:  The next meeting is Thursday 28th June at 8 pm in school, when we will be finalising the details for the Official Opening of the Field on Friday, 6th July, please come along to this meeting if you have any ideas or are willing to help in any way.

Sports Club/Thursday Club:  Miss Claridge is away on the 25th/28th June and 2nd/5th July.  There will be no Thursday Club on 19th July (sports afternoon) or 23rd July.

Music Lessons:  We are looking at the timetable for music lessons with Mrs Steady for the autumn.  If your child would be interested in taking individual lessons for the keyboard, piano, recorder or guitar please complete the slip below, or if your child would be interested in joining a group recorder lesson.  The cost of the lessons are £9 for individual 20 minute lessons and £2 for group lessons.  There is a half term commitment to these lessons.

Official Opening of the Field – 6th July 2007 – 5 pm:  Following the Official Opening there will be children’s sports, and some family races!!!  There will be a competition for the best decorated garden wheelbarrow, after the judging of the best decorated wheelbarrow they will be used for a family race!!!  The balloon launch will follow the races (more details shortly).

Library:  We need two more parents to help with the Library Rota, if you could spare an hour on a Tuesday afternoon please let Mrs Sarah Cole or myself know.
