Quitting smoking cigarettes is one of the most difficult things that any one can do, as the nicotine that they contain is very addictive. In fact, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world, and when we smoke cigarettes for a length of time, our bodies become very dependent upon it.
If a person quits smoking on a cold turkey basis he or she is likely to have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can include irritability, headaches, and inability to sleep at night, distraction and anxiety. There are certain smoking cessation aids that can be of great assistance and the have a very good track record of success in helping people to get off the cigarettes for good.
They are called Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) substances and the come in the form of nicotine gum and nicotine patches. The use of either negates the withdrawal problems that stems from the lack of nicotine, and is very helpful in the stopping of smoking cigarettes altogether.
Some folks hold a negative view of the use of these items, as they seem to feel that one bad addictive habit is just being traded for a new one. But nothing could be farther from the truth. The NRTs have no black, ugly tar that accumulates in the lungs, there in no smoke that contains hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, cyanide and other harmful chemicals, and the NRT is not likely to cause cancer or heart attacks. It is merely a substitute for the real thing. There are three major products that work in this area, and both contain nicotine, the nicotine gum, the nicotine patch and the e cig.
The nicotine gum comes in two strengths, the 4mg strength and the 2mg strength. The 4mg strength is used if the person previously smoked 20 or more cigarettes a day, and the 2mg strength is used if the person smoked less than that. The gum should be chewed at the rate of on stick per hour when first quitting smoking. The gum will reach a point where it will taste and feel hot, and chewing should stop there, and the gum “stored” against the cheek until the heat subsides, the chewing can commence again. After an hour, the gum should be thrown away, and a new stick started. As time passes, the frequency can be reduces as the need for nicotine subsides.
The second method is by wearing a nicotine patch. The patch also comes in varying strengths, which can also be weaned down to nothing over time. The advantage of wearing the patch is that it can be worn 24 hours per day and there is no need to worry about changing it or anything else. The strength of the patch can be lessened as time goes by and when the time comes to discontinue it, the patch can be discarded.
There have been thousands of people that have used the gum and the patch in order to quit smoking, most of them have had success in doing so.
